If you are sending a text message watching TV or listening to the radio, you may stop and give this your full attention. Multitasking shrinks (使.....萎缩the brain? research suggests.
A study found that men and womenwho frequently used several types of technology at the same time had less grey matter in a key part of the brain. University of Sussex researchers said, " Using mobile phones, laptops and other media devicessimultaneouslycould be changing the structure of our brains."
Worryingly, the part of the brain that shrinks is involved in processing emotion. The finding follows research which has linked multitasking with a shortened attention span, depression , anxiety and lower grades at school.
The researchers began by asking 75 healthy men and women how often they divided their attention between different types of technology. This could mean sending a text message while listening to music and checking e-mail, or speaking on the phone while watching TV and surfing the Internet. The volunteers were then given brain scans which showed they had less grey matter in a region called the anterior cingu-late cortex (ACC(前扣带皮.Scientists have proved that brain structure can be changed on exposure to fresh environments and experience.
Other studies have shown that training—such as learning to play magic tricks or taxi drivers' learning the map of London―can increase grey matter densities (密度in certain parts.
Experts have also warned of the harmful impact technology can have on our memory and attention span. The University of California team conducted a survey of more than 18,000 people aged between 18 and 99and found 20%had problems with memory. Researchers were shocked greatly by the 14 % of 18 to 39-year-old people who also worried about their memories.
Multitasking may shorten attention span, making it harder to focus and form memories, the researchers said, adding that youngsters may be particularly affected by stress.
1. The underlined word " simultaneously" in Paragraph 2 means "________" A. on one's own B. at no time C. at the same time D. by accident
2. All of the following are possible effects of multitasking EXCEPT________ .

A. saving time
B. a shortened attention span C. lower grades at school D. depression and anxiety
3. Which ofthe following can be the best title of this passage? A. Media multitasking is becoming more popular B. Multitasking shrinks the brain
C. Multitasking may shorten attention span D. People are worried about their memories.

Scientists have discovered a new behaviour among bumblebees that tricks plants into flowering early. When lack of pollen, bumblebees will bite little by little on the leaves of flower-less plants. The damage seems to fool the plant into flowering, sometimes up to 30 days earlier than normal.
With their hairy appearance and special sounds, bumblebees are hard to miss in gardens all over the world. Their hairy bodies make them excellent pollinators for crops like tomatoes and blueberries. They are among the first bees to appear each year and work a long season.
But despite their key role, bumblebees, like many other pollinators have seen their numbers decline suddenly in recent decades. One recent study pointed to climate change, reporting that an increasing number of hot days in Europe andNorth Americawas raising local bumblebees extinction rates.
But researchers have now made a discovery about bumblebees that could have something to do with their long term survival. Scientists inSwitzerlandfound that when the bumblebees were out of pollen, they started to bite on the leaves of plants that hadn't yet flowered. They used their mouths to cut clearly-shaped holes in the leaves. But the creatures didn't eat the material or use it in their nests.
The damaged plants responded by flowering earlier than normal- -in some cases up to 30 days ahead of schedule. Researchers also found that the bee damaged plants flowered 30 days earlier than undamaged plants and 25 days earlier than ones damaged by the scientists.
“I think everything that we've found is consistent with the idea that the bumblebees are damaging the plants and that that's an adaptation that brings flowers earlier and that benefits the bees,” said Dr Mark Mescher, one of the authors from ETHZurich.
4. How do bumblebees fool plants into flowering earlier?

A. By making use of the hot weather. B. By putting the false flowers on the leaves.
C. By attacking the leaves of flowerless plants. D. By taking away the pollen from the other flowers. 5. What's bumblebees’ key role?
A.Making plants flower early. B. Spreading pollen to flowers and plants.
C. Sending information about weather change. D. Finding out whether the plant has flowers. 6. What has happened to bumblebees in the past the years?
A. They are becoming homesick. B. They are not as friendly as before. C. There is a sharp decrease in number. D. They have been busy year by year. 7. What's Dr Mark Mescher's attitude towards the behaviour of bumblebees?
A. Uncaring. B. Skeptical. C. Tolerant. D. Objective.

Trees are “social creature” that communicate with each other in cooperative ways that hold lessons for humans, too, ecologist Suzanne Simard says. Simard grew up in Canadian forests as a child of loggers before becoming an ecologist. She's now a professor of forest ecology at theUniversityofBritish Columbia.
Trees are linked to neighboring trees by a network of fungi below the surface of the earth that resembles the nervous networks in the brain, she explains. In one study, Simard watched as a Douglas fir tree that had been injured by insects appeared to send chemical warning signals to a pine nearby. The pine tree then produced defense enzymes to protect against the insect.
“This was a breakthrough,” Simard says. The trees were sharing “information that actually is important to the health of the whole forest.”
In addition to warning each other of danger, Simard says that trees have been known to share nutrients at critical times to keep each other healthy. She says the trees in a forest are often linked to each other via an older tree she calls a “mother” or “hub” tree.
“In connecting with all the trees of different ages, the mother trees can actually ease the growth of these young trees,” she says. “The young trees will link into the network of the old trees and benefit from that huge resource capacity. And the old trees would also pass a little bit of carbon and nutrients and water to the young trees, at crucial times in their lives, that actually help them survive.”
The study of trees took on a new resonance for Simard when she suffered from breast cancer. During her treatment, she learned that one of the medicines she relied on was actually obtained from what some trees produce for their own mutual defense. She explains her research on cooperation in the forest, and shares her
personal story in the new bookFinding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of theForest. 8. How could a Douglas fir tree send chemical warning signals to a pine nearby? A. By an underground network of fungi. B. By the nervous networks in the brain. C. By making cooperation with each other. D. By holding lessons to it as human beings. 9. According to Simard, what was a breakthrough? A. Simard was-brought up in Canadian forests. B. She became a professor of forest ecology. C. The pine tree produced defense enzymes. D. Vital information was shared among trees. 10. What helped Simard understand trees further?
A. Her rich knowledge of trees. B. Her childhood in the forest. C. Her medicine gained from trees. D. Her research on cooperation. 11. In Simard's book we may discover the wisdom of the forest except . A. communicating cooperatively B. warning each other of danger C. sharing nutrientsat critical times D. sacrificing mother trees for survival

An unmanned Chinese spacecraft left the earth on a trip to the planet Mars on Thursday. The launch(发射)marks the start of one of China's most important space explorations. China's national space agency launched the spacecraft called Tianwen-1 fromthe Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Center on Hainan Island.
The name Tianwen means “Questions to Heaven” in Chinese. The spacecraft took off on China's largest carrier rocket, the Long March 5, and about 36 minutes later, the spacecraft, including an orbiter(轨道飞行器)and a rover(漫游车)was sent into the Earth-Mars orbit. It is expected to reach the orbit of the red planet next February. Tianwen-1 will finish three scientific goals—orbiting the red planet, landing on the Mars and sending a rover to the landing site.
Tianwen-1 carries several scientific instruments to observe the planet's atmosphere and surface. It will do a series of scientific researches on the planet's soil, geological structure, environment, atmosphere and water. Besides its daily work of exploring the surface of Mars for 90 days, it will also report back to the earth about its experiences on the red planet, which is millions of miles away. According to experts, discovering signs of life will
be its first and most important scientific goal.
Tianwen-1's successful landing will make China the second nation to place a spacecraft on Mars. The United States has landed eight vehicles on Mars since 1976. China will be the first to successfully orbit, land and place a vehicle in the same mission. This is China's first independent mission to Mars. The task in 2011 failed when a Russian rocket carrying a Chinese orbiter had problems after launch, and was unable to escape the Earth orbit. Last year, China's Chang e-4 spacecraft became the first to make a landing on the far side of the moon. 12. When will Tianwen-1 enter the orbit of Mars? A. 36 minutes later. B. Next Thursday. C. In 90 days. D. Next February.
13. What is the main task of Tianwen-1 according to experts? A. Orbiting the Mars. B. Landing on the Mars.
C. Discovering signs of life. D. Sending a rover to the landing site. 14. Which of the following statements is mentioned in the text? A. Tianwen-1 is the second vehicle landed on the Mars. B. The United States is the first to land vehicles on the Mars. C. Russia helped China place Tianwen-1 on the Mars. D. Change-4 was the first to make a landing on the moon. 15. Where can you find this article?
A. In a newspaper. B. In a diary. C. In a sci-fi novel. D. In a guide book. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

The factors that cause youth unemployment often differ among regions and labor systems.____16____Since firing full-time workers is so complicated and expensive, employers are unwilling to take on new staff, while people who are already employed, mainly older workers, often keep their jobs for life. In developing countries with high birthrates and very young populations, like the Philippines, growth isn’t strong enough to absorb the wave of youngsters entering the workforce each year.____17____Young people entering the workforce are often the most vulnerable(易受伤害的)in economic downturns — new employees are often the first to get sacked, while college graduates find few employers willing to hire.
___18___In Spain, Italy and Japan, for instance, companies looking to gain flexibility in regulated labor
markets often offer new, young staffers only short-term contracts. These contracts, which sometimes last for only a few days, usually come with low salaries and few benefits. Since such staff is temporary, employers have little intention to invest in training.
Facing such obstacles, young people everywhere are finding that traditional route to success — education — isn’t paying off as much as in the past.____19____They will often be offered low-skilled jobs from waiters to supermarket clerks. A March report form the UK’s Office for National Statistics showed that the share of recent college graduates in Britain working in lower-skilled jobs rose to nearly 35% in 2011 form less than 27% a decade earlier.____20____Typical is Cairo’s Ahmed Said. He graduated from college with a business degree, and after performing the obligatory(义务的)year of military service, he applied for jobs in accounting and data entry. But Said, 24, had no luck, and today he works as a waiter at a cafe near Tahrir Square. “This was my last choice,” he says, “and this is the job that I got.”
A. Young graduates often find themselves competing with more-experienced workers. B. More and more college graduates are forced to take jobs below their skill level. C. They started applying for any positions they could find in other countries. D. In some parts of the world, such jobs are all that is available to college graduates. E. Yet youth unemployment also has common roots throughout the world.
F. Those young workers who do find employment are often trapped in awful contracts.
G. In much of Western Europe overemphasized labor protection makes it more difficult for youths to land good jobs.
