-----Samuel&David
the past 5 years | Chanel | China’s market | always | make profit |
manager | main task | lead a team | achieve | set targets |
now | improve | our market share | most effective | way |
one of the | explore | new markets | ||
these years | Shanghai’s economy | rapid growth | mostly due to |
foreign investment | vast inflow | ||
company | success | not | depend on | our strategy |
great | but | execute | Fulfill | |
How to achieve more profits
To achieve higher profits, we need to improve our sales revenue while reduce our cost.
How to achieve higher profits I guess it depends, like, first we have to make sure our sales revenue is getting high, which means more customers are buying our products, and at the same time, we also have to come up with ideas to reduce our cost, which will likely to further enlarge our profit margin…..
Why English is important for MBA
It’s because, first of all, we need English to better learn our MBA classes, secondly, English will be important for us to get a better job in the future.
1) How did you spend your Spring Festival
Spring festival is the most important festival for Chinese people, there are many activities which can do, firstly, I will visit relative and have dinner with them, and secondly I will watch the spring festival gala evening on CCTV.
2) What is the difference between a manager and a leader
提示:a,制定战略:make a strategy b,执行:execution
I think the difference between a manager and a leader is that the manager will make a strategy, and the leader will do the execution.
3) What qualifications is a manager supposed to have
I believe the confidence is most important to a manager, meanwhile, EQ, analytical skill, domain knowledge, time management skill and task distribution are also pay a very important role.
4) Why did Wall-Mart fail to grow big in China
提示:a,shopping habits b,satellites-based global management system
5) What shall we do to promote the development in western regions
提示:a,encourage talents b,infrastructure c,preferential policies
6) Why don you want to apply for a MBA degree
提示:a,management knowledge b,change career
Now Shanghai’s cars are getting more and more, it means that people’s income is becoming higher and higher. But too many cars caused serious traffic jams. I think the government should do something about it.
With people’s income continuously increasing, the number of cars in shanghai has witnessed rapid growth these years. Yet, the excessive growth of cars has led to serious traffic jams, and it’s time for the government
I think, in this case, this company can not retain the employees, because it doesn’t treat employees as the most important asset, and…also…it doesn’t have a good incentive system, and……so…people don’t work hard.
Price war will only make both parties lose.
I think, in this case, the manager doesn’t trust his people, and do everything himself. He doesn’t know how to give power to them, so….he is very tired, but his people don’t care. What’s more, he also doesn’t know how to divide jobs, so…his people don’t know what to do, and don’t know the target.

Well I think I do, though it’s not as detailed as my daily timetable.
I guess my MBA study will fall into 3 steps.
For the first couple of months, I will basically focus on textbooks. I mean I will try my best to learn elementary MBA courses, like management science, the art of decision making, finance, marketing and alike. Through the first step, I expect to lay a solid theoretical foundation for my further learning.
During the second step, I will find chances to put my knowledge into full play. There are actually a lot of ways to do it, like case study, management practice, forum, simulation, intern and etc. By doing these, I expect to have some hands-on experience of how these theories can be best used in real world,
As to the last step, I will try to position myself in the working world by what I have learnt.

My strengths will be strengthened and my weakness will be weakened.
Seriously, I reckon I will benefit in the following.
To start with, my business knowledge will be enriched. By learning those scientifically designed curriculums, like economics, management, finance and marketing, I will more deeply than ever understand how the business world really goes around.
Second, I guess my mindset will be changed. I mean I will have a brand new way of looking at problems, by learning new approaches of decision makings. One more thing, my leadership skills will be promoted and I will know better how to conduct business in my future work.
Last, my business network will be expanded by getting to know many talented classmates, and I will have clearer ideas of how to develop my career in the future.

Well, as far as I see it, working experience is important, but not prerequisite for MBA study.
Working experience is important because,
first of all, students with experiences will have clearer targets of what they want to learn during their study. For example, a student with a technical background will focus on the learning of economic and managerial knowledge.
Secondly, students with work experience will choose to look at and analyze problems in a different way. A financial formula which is no difference from a pure mathematical equation to a college student will convey deeper underlying meanings to a MBA student.
A college student wonders why he has to learn this or that, but a MBA student knows exactly why. A college student wonders how to use the knowledge in real world, but a MBA student does.
So working experience serves as a guide in MBA study.
There is no doubt that English is very very important in MBA study.
To begin with, almost all of the modern economic and management theory is coming from the developed English speaking countries. If we better master this language, we will not only feel easier to learn the knowledge, but will also much more deeply understand them.
Secondly, MBA students usually have classes given by foreign teachers. What’s more, students with better English ability will have more opportunities to be selected as exchange student to other countries for academic activities.
Lastly, students with good English will be more likely to find better jobs with higher salary after graduation. As we know, most of the top international companies usually have high requirements of English proficiency.

First of all, I want to make sure that I apply for MBA not because I expect to find a better job. The real reason for my application is that I desire to improve my management knowledge and other related skills during these 2 years,
What’s more, it’s not easy to say if we can find better jobs or not. Finding a job is a mutual choice, with companies opening positions and looking for the qualified candidates, and with students making detailed self-assessment and trying to find the best employers. Better job is obtained only if these two demands are perfectly matched.
Last, the job market is always changing, according to the overall well-being of the economy, If the entire business is good, the demand for MBA will also increase, and vice versa.
Anyway, my point is that: when you are improving the right things at the right time, there will always be right positions for you right after your graduation.

历史It has a brilliant history and is one of the most mysterious place for the west .

1) Brief Management Summary
Management is about how to lead a group of people ( or a team), to achieve a certain target, by making use of the limited resources effectively, and by scientific labor divisions.
Managers usually do 4 things: planning, organizing, leading, directing and controlling.
Planning: when you say “we plan to reach one billion of sales next quarter”, you are actually doing planning. Planning means we decide on our targets or the approaches to achieve them. Remember, the plan should be SMART, which means to say it has to be Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic and Time-based.
Organizing: we divide the job into small tasks, and assign them to qualified employees. One only has to report to one person in charge: specialist to supervisor, supervisor to manager, manager to director and so on. Make sure everyone has his own Clear Job Description, Objective, Performance Assessment List and etc.
Leadership: you are the top dog, you have to check if the team is working efficiently and effectively, you need to constantly motivate them and maintain the morale, Apart from being the authority, you also need to walk out of the office and talk to your people.
Controlling: you make sure if the team is working towards the target, and if there is any emergency, you get the problem fixed or the plan adjusted.
One thing to remember is that a manager don’t do planning today, and organizing tomorrow, in fact, most managers have to do the four functions at the same time.
Your practice:
Our objective is to become….
During planning, we have to answer two questions: what to do, and how to do There are short-term, medium-term and long term plans, according to the time limit. There are also sales plan, production plan, and financial plan, according to the function.
Whatever planning we make, we always aim to achieve a certain target. For example, we aim to improve our sales revenue, to reduce our cost, or to promote our brand and etc.
The target must be measurable, attainable, and time-bound. By being measurable, the target must be clearly specified and quantified. By being attainable, the target must be realistic and can be realized by making use of our current resources. By being time-bound, the target must be realized in a certain period of time.
Companies usually have to take a lot of things into account when making a strategy, such as the industry environment, policies, market opportunities, competitors, substitutes, own advantages, own weaknesses and potential threats.
Your practice:
替代产品:C2C也在快速发展,淘宝网的图书音像和IT数码交易量和我们相当;
Our short-term target is to…..
20%... Improve sales revenue by 20%......
As to the product department….
There are many things we can’t achieve alone. Therefore, people join in an organization, and fulfill targets collectively. To establish an organization, we have to make sure labor is well divided, and power is well distributed.
Three things for an organization:
Departmentalization: for any company, there are many different departments responsible for a specific function. For example, marketing department focuses on sales promotion, strengthening public relations, brand building, or marketing programs.
Layers of an organization: most organizations look like a pyramid, from the lowest level to the highest. Some organizations are flat, like IT industry, and some others are very vertical with many management layers, like traditional industry.
Companies choose to be flat because they want to improve communication efficiency, and become more adaptive to the changing environment. Companies choose to be hierarchical, or vertical because they want policies to be well implemented, organization to be well controlled and power to be well centralized.
How to authorize properly
When I authorize to my subordinates, I usually consider the followings:
1, Is the decision important to the company
2, Does my subordinate have the ability to run the power
3, Can I successfully control everything when things go out of control
4, Am I the kind of person who trust people
Leader is the one who directs, influences, and stimulates the employees so as to realize the targets.
The biggest difference between a leader and a manager is that leaders usually focus on making strategy, while managers usually focus on execution. For example, Liu Qing Mei is a leader, while Double Liu is a manager.
A leader is definitely a manager, but a manager is not definitely a leader.
Why does a leader have power A leader usually has formal and informal powers:
Formal power: when you are a leader, you will be regarded and treated as a leader, your power is given by the position.
Informal power: the power gained from your authority, personal ability, integrity, personality, or even your appearance.
Human resource is the most important assets for any company. Every company is involved in the following questions:
✧ What kind of employees do we want to recruit
✧ What requirements do we expect from the employees
✧ What is the job description
✧ Should we recruit inside, or recruit outside
✧ How do we make sure that we select the right people during interviews
✧ Is working experience important when recruiting employees
✧ What measures shall we take to best motivate the employees
✧ What do our employees care most, bonus, or salary and position promotion
✧ What should be taken into account when evaluating our employees:intelligence, personal abilities, work performance, work attitude or potential
✧ Who is going to evaluate them, direct boss, colleagues, or subordinates
✧ How frequent should they be evaluated, once in a month, or once in a quarter
✧ Shall we offer them with on-the-job training opportunities
2)Brief Economics Summary
Economics and Marketing
Just have look around, there are a wide variety of goods and services in sight. As a white collar living in the urban area like Shanghai, you are consuming almost every day: you take a taxi to the office in the morning, buy your breakfast around the street corner, make a phone call to tell your lover, meet your friends or clients in Starbucks after work, and even enjoy yourself in a nightclub.
You are also bombarded with vast amount of business info on newspapers, websites, BBS and Blogs, or magazines. You’re constantly informed how the stock market is going, whether the world oil price keeps soaring, how quickly RMB is appreciating against dollar, or how a certain domestic company is proudly expanding its business in the global market and so on.
All these have a lot to do with economics, marketing, management, finance and a lot others. Yet, I’m not about to give business lectures, nor am I so veteran at it, what I will do is to sum up the basic business English briefly and easily. It will prove to be absolutely important, particularly for International MBA applicants, as you’ll soon face a tough interview: business Case Study in English.
I know you guys have years of working experience, and you know how the business world is running around, but the problem is that some of you fail to express yourself in English as well as you do in Chinese when it comes to business issues. You got to know some of the frequently used business terms and methodologies to make you better survive the tough interview.
One more suggestion from Samuel is that business English will be prerequisite for you to become a qualified global-oriented manager in the future. You skip it today, and you’ll have to face it tomorrow. So why not give it a shoot before you step into your dream MBA School
1. Demand:
Customers have disposable income, and they spend money in the market to satisfy their various needs. Customers’ demands are decided by their income, consumption behaviors and psychology, and above all, price.
Demand and price usually have negative relations. It means that when the price declines, they will choose to buy more; whereas, when price grows up, they will choose to buy less.
For example:
Today as the price of notebooks keeps declining, a growing number of young people in China begin to own a notebook!
Today, as the oil price is growing, manufactures who used to rely on oil as input are beginning to seek other fuels, which leads to less demand for oil.
But stock market is an exception, which means the higher the price, the more our crazy people buy!
2. Supply:
There are always suppliers of certain goods and services as long as there is market demand. Manufactures use labor, capital and raw materials to produce goods and services and sell in the market, for a profit.
Usually, supply and price have positive relations. It means that when the price of a certain product declines, they will choose to supply less, whereas, when price grows up, they will choose to supply more.
For example:
Today, as the housing price of urban areas is growing, an increasing number of investors are joining this market to offer more houses; Remember radio The price is declining so sharply that no more manufactures are willing to produce it.
3. Equilibrium of demand and supply
There is never perfect and unchanged equilibrium in the market, because supply and demand is always changing, making price change all the time too!
But there is an “invisible hand”, or a force, which is always trying to “pull” the demand and supply to the equilibrium point! (Adam Smith said so)
At a given price, when supply exceeds demand too much, which means that there are many producers willing to supply, while there are not too many customers willing to buy, the price will tend to decline to clear the market;
Yet, at a given price, when demand exceeds supply too much, which means that there are many customers willing to buy, while there are not too many producers willing to supply, the price will tend to grow;
4. Price elasticity
It’s a very important concept in economics, and economists use it a lot.
What are you going to do when the price of BMW declines to 50 thousand RMB I guess you will rush to buy one. But what are you going to do when the price of salt declines to 0.1 Yuan per pack I don’t think you will rush to buy more.
It means that you are sensitive to the price of a car, but you are not very sensitive to the price of salt.
OK, in economic terms, it means that the price elasticity of a car is very high, while the price elasticity of salt is relatively very low. Usually, luxury goods have higher elasticity, while necessities or must-products have lower elasticity.
So, if you lower the price of luxuries, you will get more sales revenue; but if you lower the price of necessities, you will get less. Vice versa.
Questions:
● Currently, the pork price is growing in major cities in China, why Has the sales revenue of pork suppliers declined Why
● Why electronic products like cameras, cell phones keep declining in price these years (use demand-supply-analysis and elasticity)
5. Deeper analysis of customers and suppliers
1) Customers’ consumption
Micro-economics usually suck, as they use too much calculus and marginal analysis, which is not going to be mastered in a short time.
Customers use their limited income, or disposable income (which is determined by GDP per capita), to consume in order to satisfy their needs, and lead a life as enjoyable as possible. Their goal is to get the highest satisfaction ( or utility ) by properly using their money on different types of goods and services.
Westerners think that price is kinda subjective, which means that the more satisfaction a product offers, the higher price the customer wants to pay!
For example, you are about to take the subway home one night, but the last subway will leave in 3 minute, you want to buy a ticket with cash, but only coins are accepted! The price of the ticket is 3 Yuan, but you only got cash valued 5 Yuan. So, if one of the passing-bys is willing to give you 3 coins in exchange for your 5 Yuan cash, will you do it I think you will, because taking a taxi home would charge you even more, dude!
Remember one thing before we go on: no matter how much you like something, when you get excessively too many or much, your interest or satisfaction will tend to decline. For example, you like girls, but if you get hundreds of them, you will get nailed up!
In economic words, it means that for a certain product, if you consume one more, your marginal satisfaction will drop.
So when you allocate your money among different goods you want to buy, you will keep on allocating till each of them seems to be equal to one another in marginal satisfaction.
For example, you are a game freak. So, the consumption of a game will have much more marginal satisfaction than that of foods. So you choose to spend on game too much till your marginal satisfaction of it tends to decline to the level equal to that of the foods, as a result, 90% of your income is spent on games, while 10% is spent on foods.
Switching cost: in reality, customers usually have loyalty to a certain brand, which makes it difficult for them to transfer to another product even if the price of their favorite brand grows. It means, the switching cost of the brand is high, it’s good thing! For example, I like Nestle coffee, which means that even if its price grows, I will also stick to it, rather than taking Moca instead.
Practice a little bit
Why girls like to spend most of their money on clothes and cosmetics
Diamond is not very much useful in life, but they are expensive; water is very important in life, but they are cheap. Why
Chanel is more expensive than Loreal, why Chanel still has its own buyers
2) Manufacturing and supply
As I have said, manufactures use inputs to produce their goods and services. The inputs usually include labor, capital and raw materials.
What the manufactures should do is to maximize their outputs while minimize their inputs. That is, they try to improve production efficiency, and optimize their cost structure.
When the more they produce, the lower the cost becomes, it means they have achieved Economies of Scale, as a result, the average cost declines.
The reasons for Economies of Scale is that
A, fixed investment, like machinery doesn’t change with production.
B, when scale increases, labor division will improves efficiency,
C, when scale increases, manufacturing can obtain lower purchasing price,
3) Break-even point
You fixed cost is around 100 million USD, your variable cost is 10 USD per unit, and the price is 20 USD per unit. So how many products do you have to sell in order to make sure at least your sales revenue is equal to the total cost (which is the sum of fixed cost and variable cost)
Price * quantity = fixed cost + variable cost
20 USD * quantity = 100m USD + 10 USD * quantity
→ Quantity = 10 million units
It means that if you can sell out 10 million units, you will reach the break even point, which means you neither make money, nor lose money.
What if you only sell out 5 million units Will you continue to run the business Well, yes, as your fixed cost is upfront, and you can’t change it overnight. As long as your sales revenue is bring money back to compensate your fixed cost, you will continue this business.
4) Competition forms in the market
Perfectly competitive ( very very competitive)
In a perfectly competitive market, all the products offered are the same, or homogeneous, which means customers can choose to buy from any one of them. As a result, none of the producers have any power on prices, they have to accept the market price (which means they are just price-takers), otherwise, if they improve their price, their products will not be wanted any more.
There is no absolute perfectly competitive market in real world, but some of the markets are a bit close to them, for example, the country marketplace. There are so many farmers selling the same vegetables, that none of them dear to charge higher prices compared to the other sellers.
Imperfectly competitive markets
In real world, market forms are usually between perfectly competitively market and monopolistic market.
There is monopolistic competitive market, in which a large number of small firms supply related but somewhat differentiated products. For the Shampoo markets for example, there are pantene, Head-shoulders, and Rejoice, yet, each of them has relatively different prices, because each of their shampoos is a bit differentiated to one another. In marketing terms, it means that each of them has their targeted market groups, and their customers have some sort of brand loyalty, which means they’re willing to pay a bit differently to their favorites.
There is oligopoly market, in which a few sellers of a similar or differentiated product supply the industry. Take telecommunication industry for example, there is China Unicom and China Mobile, and these two biggest firms cover almost all the telecommunication services around China.
In most circumstances, oligopolies are surviving under government regulations or protections, or the market as a whole requires patent and a great sum of investment, which excludes most of the investors outside. In oligopoly, the market is very concentrated, which means the top 2 to 3 firms occupy a large market share. They can even form collusion with other oligopolies, set game rules on prices, so as to jointly extract the customers.
The extreme market form is monopoly, which means that a single firm produces all the output or products in a given industry. China-Power is one of them, and no other company in China is capable or eligible to supply electricity to Chinese residents.
Monopoly usually leads to lower efficiency, higher price, and lower quality.
