Have you ever done something for someone else—knowing that your actions would solely benefit THEM and not YOU? Maybe you opened a door or donated blood or volunteered in a hospital’s ER during the pandemic. This is called a prosocial behavior. Humans engage in these types of behaviors all the time.
But a question remains in science: Are we the only species who do this? As one of out closest s, chimpanzees have long been studied for signs of this. So far, research has provided mixed results on the question.
Some studies show that chimps cooperatively hunt, share food and comfort each other. But one study came to a very different conclusion. The study used a controlled lab experiment where chimpanzees in enclosures were given two options: push a button to give food to themselves or push the button to give food to themselves AND a partner chimp. If they chose the latter, it was seen as a prosocial behavior. But the result is that chimps showed no special preferences for feeding themselves and a friend over feeding just themselves. Another study conducted by DeTroy, however, discovered a totally different result.
Compared to previous controlled lab-based experiments, the setup for DeTroy’s research was very naturalistic. “We installed a button and a fountain into the chimpanzees’ outer enclosures. When an individual pushes the button, it releases juice from the fountain. However, since the button and fountain are approximately five meters apart, the individual pushing cannot directly drink from the fountain. And if any other chimpanzees are at the fountain when the button is pushed, they, and not the pusher, will be able to drink the juice.
In this experiment, chimpanzees showed a willingness to act in the interest of others, with individual chimpanzees prepared to push the button without benefiting themselves.
“It is really fascinating to see that many of the chimpanzees were willing to prosocially provide valuable resources to the group members even if they couldn’t benefit themselves from their behavior.” said DeTroy.
Further research may reveal what lies behind their prosocial motivation. But for now, it’s safe to assume that
chimpanzees are not simply aping human behavior. 4. Which of the following belongs to prosocial behaviors?
A. Jack participated in voluntary work in the library just to earn credits. B. Mark turned to his classmate for help when feeling stressful in study. C. Tim guided a lost child back home on his way to an important job interview. D. Rose often interrupted the teacher to ask questions actively in the math’s class. 5. What is the task of the chimpanzees in the lab-based study? A. Sharing food. B. Making a choice. C. Comforting others. D. Showing sympathy. 6. How is DeTroy’s study different from the previous ones? A. It was based on controlled lab experiment. B. It gave juice to the chimpanzees as a reward.
C. It offered the tested chimpanzees a natural surrounding. D. It provided a chance for chimpanzees to help their partners. 7. What can we learn from DeTroy’s quotes? A. Chimpanzees can develop abilities to help others. B. Chimpanzees have acquired many human behaviors. C. Chimpanzees in the wild is cleverer than those in the lab. D. Chimpanzees displayed prosocial behaviors for certain rewards.

A city inSouth Korea, which has the world’s largest number of people using smartphones, has placed flashing lights and laser beams at a road crossing to warn “smartphone zombies” to look up and drivers to slow down, in the hope of preventing accidents.
The designers of the system were motivated by growing worry that more pedestrians glued to their phones will become victims in a country that already has some of the highest road death and injury rates among developed countries. State-run Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT believes its system of flashing lights at zebra crossings can warn both pedestrians and drivers.
In addition to red, yellow and blue LED lights on the pavement, “smombies” - smartphone zombies - will be warned by laser beam projected from power poles and a warning sent to the phones by an app that they are about to step into traffic.

“Increasing number of smombie accidents have occurred in pedestrian crossings, so these zombie lights are essential to prevent these pedestrian accidents,” said KICT senior researcher Kim Jong-hoon. Drivers are warned by the flashing lights, which have shown to be effective 83.4 percent of the time in the institute’s tests involving about 1,000 vehicles.
In 2017, more than 1,600 pedestrians were killed in auto related accidents, which is about 40 percent of total traffic deaths, according to data from the Traffic Accident Analysis System. For now, the smombie warning system is placed only in Ilsan, a suburban city about30 kmnorthwest of the capital,Seoul, but is expected to go nationwide, according to the institute.
Kim Dan-hee, a 23-year-old resident of Ilsan, welcomed the system, saying she was often too absorbed in her phone to remember to look at traffic. “This flashing light makes me feel safe as it makes me look around again, and I hope that we can have more of these in town,” she said.
8. What do the underlined words “smartphone zombies” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. Drivers driving after drunk. B. Pedestrians buried in their phones. C. Passengers crazy about phones. D. Policemen in charge of traffic. 9. What do we know about the warning system?
A. It has reduced death rate by 83.4%. B. It has been spread nationwide. C. It gives a warning to the smartphones. D. It is being tried out in many places. 10. What was the residents’ attitude to the traffic system? A. Negative. B. Unconcerned. C. Disapproving. D. Favorable. 11. What is the best title for the text?
A.South KoreaWarns Smartphone Zombies of Traffic B. Flashing Lights Are Used to Prevent Accidents C. Smartphone Zombies Are Causing Traffic Accidents D.South KoreaUses a New Traffic System

52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Twenty years ago, Chase Poust was only 7. On Sunday morning just before the Memorial Day, he, his dad Steven, and his 4-year-old sister, Abigail, were out for a family boating trip on Florida's St. Johns River, which was trackless and almost nobody knew about it. And there's no rescue center nearby. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck (甲板 fishing.
It was a perfect outing- it was so peaceful and quiet and the color1 s of the deep blue sky, the light green river water and the mild late May sunshine mixed to create a magic scene. Everything was sound until a strong current emerged and loosened Abigail's grasp and she let go of the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her. At the same time, Chase screamed at his father desperately.
Without thinking twice, Steven jumped into the water and swam towards the two kids with all his efforts. But after realizing he couldn't keep up with both kids, he was faced with a heartbroken decision. He told them he
loved them very much because he wasn't sure what's going to happen. Steven tried his best to stick with both of his children. He wore himself out. But his little daughter was washed away from him. Directing Chase to swim to shore for help Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old, but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired, he'd rest and then set off again. The current was going the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore, so it was very hard to swim that way for Chase.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 An hour later, Chase swam to the shore, anyhow.
