There was a man who had four sons. He hoped that his sons could learn not to judge things too quickly. So one day he gave his four sons a task, asking each of them to go to see a pear tree at a distance in different season.

The first son set out in winter, the second in spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in autumn.

The first son said the tree was ugly, bent, without leaves and therefore hopeless.

The second son said it was not like that, but the tree was covered with green buds(新芽) and full of hope.

The third son disagreed, saying that it was full of flowers which smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, and that he had never seen such beautiful scenery.

The last son disagreed with all of them, saying that the tree was filled with fruits, full of life and happiness.

The man told his sons that all of them were correct, because they only saw the tree in the one season. He told them that they could not judge a tree or a person only by one season, and that only when all the seasons was over could they know a tree or a person fully.

We can learn more from this story. If we just give up in winter, we will miss the hope of spring, the beauty of your summer, and the harvest of autumn in our life.

Will it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work or study with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.

Opposite to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

11. During the test, those who were tested were given ________.

A. no breakfast at all B. very rich breakfast

C. little food for breakfast D. different breakfast or none

12. The results of the test show that ________.

A. breakfast has great effect on work and studies

13. According to the passage, if a student does not eat breakfast, ___________.

A. he will fall ill

B. he will fail to listen to his teacher

C. he will not make progress in his study

D. his mind will work more slowly

14. Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?

A. Poor breakfasts affect those who work with brains.

B. Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.

C. If you don’t eat much for lunch and supper, you may lose weight.

D. The more breakfast you have, the more quickly you’ll learn in class

15. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Good Breakfast                                      B. Why Eating Breakfast?
C. No eating, No gaining                                 D. What is breakfast

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would help me and take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the cityand when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning, In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
“Thank you”—two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.
