Deepreadingrequiresnotjusttime,butaspecialkindoftimewhichcan’tbeobtainedmerelybybecomingmoreefficient.
Infact,“becomingmoreefficient”ispartoftheproblem.
Thinkingoftimeasaresourcetobemaximisedmeansyouapproachitinstrumentally,
judginganygivenmomentaswellspentonlyinsofarasitadvancesprogresstowardsomegoal.
Immersivereading,bycontrast,dependsonbeingwillingtoriskinefficiency,goallessness,

eventime-wasting.
Trytoslotitasato-dolistitemandyou’llmanageonlygoal-focusedreading—useful,sometimes,butnotthemostfulfillingkind.

“Carryabookwithyouatalltimes”canactuallywork,too—providingyoudipinoftenenough,sothatreadingbecomesthedefaultstatefromwhichyoutemporarilysurfacetotakecareofbusiness,beforedroppingbackdown.
Onareallygoodday,itnolongerfeelsasifyou’re“makingtimetoread,”butjustreading,andmakingtimeforeverythingelse.
