Directions: Read the excerpt from Parkour: The Spirit of Freedom in Unit 8 of the textbook and answer the questions that follow.

When David Belle was a young man, he wasn’t particularly interested in sports. What bothered the Frenchman was the regulated and overly competitive way most sports are played. Disillusioned, he quit the sports clubs in search of something else.

David had always known his father Raymond had been renowned for acts of incredible athleticism and daring as a young man working for the Paris Fire Brigade, a renowned military unit. As he grew older, David became intrigued by newspaper clippings and tales of his father’s exploits. He decided to pick Belle, Sr.’s brain. Raymond’s approach to physical fitness has been born out of necessity. Born in Vietnam to a French father and a Vietnamese mother, Raymond Belle had been orphaned at the age of seven and taken to a children’s home run by the army. Having to depend on himself he became obsessed with developing his strength and agility and would sneak out of the orphanage at night and practice on the obstacle course. He also developed his own courses, which included jumping from branch to branch in trees like a nimble, referring to his training as “parcours.” His aim was to be physically prepared for any obstacle that might be in his path. Raymond cited the pioneering physical educator and theorist Georges Hébert as an influence. Hébert had promoted a “natural method” of fitness training consisting of ten fundamental skills, such as running, jumping, climbing and crawling.

Directions: Read the excerpt from Hard Core: How to Work Your Essential Muscles in Unit 10 of the textbook and answer the questions that follow.

The core of your body – that’s basically your whole body, excluding your limbs – is crucial to your overall health. Many people think of the abdominal muscles, as the only core muscles but, in fact, there are a total of 15 muscles in the chest, stomach, back and hips all of which contribute to balance, posture, movement and strength. Sit-ups and push-ups are the most well-known core exercises, but there are plenty of others that are beneficial, and you don’t need a gym membership to get started.

Plank

There are many variations of this exercise. The basic maneuver involves lying on your back and lifting your body off the floor with your forearms and toes, keeping your elbows at a 90 -degree angle. Make sure to keep your body straight and don’t arch your back. Stay in this position for half a minute each time. Lifting one foot while performing this exercise can add to the difficulty and doing it in a push-up position will really put your entire core as well as your upper- and lower-body muscles to the test. Yet another version consists of pulling your knee up toward your body then moving it in a circle, clockwise followed by counterclockwise. Repeat this a few times, then switch legs.

36. According to the passage, which is not included in your core muscles?

a. abdominals b. hips

c. chest d. neck

37. Why does the writer mention that a gym membership is not needed?

a. Core muscle exercises don’t require equipment.

b. Core muscle exercises don’t require indoor space.

c. Memberships are too expensive.

d. Memberships are not available.

38. According to the passage, what does exercising your core muscles help with?

a. increased appetite b. good stance

c. weight loss d. better flexibility

39. What does the writer offer as a challenge when planking?

a. lift a hand b. arch your back

c. lift a foot d. hold the position for 10 seconds

40. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word version?

a. posture b. core c. position d. variation

Directions: Read the excerpt from Underrated Cities in Unit 11 of the textbook and answer the questions that follow.

C. Nara, Japan

As with the other locations on this list, Nara suffers from being ignored in favor of its much more famous neighbor, Kyoto. Nara, like Kyoto, was once the capital of Japan, albeit for a fleeting period in the eighth century. The city is full of historic shrines, temples and gardens where you can stroll without fear of being disturbed by the raucous hordes that plague Kyoto. It is also home to well-preserved machiya – traditional wooden houses – particularly in the old merchant district of Naramchi, where many of these buildings have been converted into eateries. If you feel like a tipple, stop by the 130-year-old Harushika brewery for a glass of sake.

D. Kotor, Montenegro

Montenegro doesn’t feature highly on the must-see lists of most tourists.

Indeed, many people are not even aware of the existence of this country on the Adriatic Sea in Southwestern Europe. One of six republics under the former country of Yugoslavia, Montenegro declared independence in 2006. The world-famous city of Dubrovnik is just over the border in Croatia, but the beautifully preserved medieval town of Kotor is arguably every bit as enchanting and just as deserving of its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Towering over the orange rooftops and cobbled lanes of the town is the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, which dates from 1166.

41. According to the passage, what was Nara once known for?

a. Being bigger than Kyoto b. Being safe

c. Being traditional d. Being a capital city

42. According to the passage, what is one advantage of Nara over Kyoto?

a. There are more traditional hotels. b. There are fewer crowds.

c. You can get a glass of sake. d. It is closer to Tokyo.

43. According to the passage, when did Montenegro come into existence?

a. in 1166 b. in 2006

c. 130 years ago d. No one knows.

44. According to the passage, what is unique about Kotor?

a. It is close to Dubrovnik. b. It is a medieval town.

c. It is a World Heritage Site. d. All of the above.

45. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word enchanting?

a. deserving b. towering

c. beautiful d. raucous

Directions: Read the excerpt from Wish You Were Here in the Review 4 section of the textbook and answer the questions that follow.

Dear Noel,

By the time you receive this, I’ll have caught the bus to Mirissa, a small town on the south coast. It’s strange to think that I am going to be enjoying scorching temperatures on the beach, having been hiking in freezing cold weather up in the mountains just this morning. Sri Lanka really is a country of great contrasts within a relatively small space.

The train ride to Haputale was an incredible experience. I had read about it in the Friendly World book, but – you know how it is – sometimes these things don’t live up to your hopes. In this case, though, the journey exceeded all my expectations. Having partied a little too hard the night before, I missed the morning train from the historic former capital of Kandy. In a way it was a blessing in disguise, as I wouldn’t have bumped into the lovely family that I met on the midday train. They were really friendly and shared their vada (a local snack that hawkers sell on buses and trains island-wide) with me, which was great as I had forgotten to bring any provisions for the journey. The youngest son even introduced me to some Sri Lankan pop, which was interesting!

46. According to the writer, where will he or she be when you read this e-mail message?

a. on a beach b. on a bus

c. in Haputale d. in a small town

47. What can we infer about the weather in Sri Lanka?

a. It varies from each location. b. It is hot everywhere.

c. It is cold only in winter. d. It is dry in the mountains.

48. Why did the writer miss the train to Haputale?

a. He stayed out late the night before. b. His alarm clock didn’t work.

c. The train schedule was wrong. d. He went to the wrong station.

49. What did the writer try on the train ride?

a. fresh water b. some candy

c. his own provisions d. a drink

50. Which of the following is closest in meaning to scorching?

a. a little warm b. somewhat hot

c. hot d. extremely hot
