第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的AB,C,D四个选项中,选出正确答案

A

Lost Horizon

In Frank Capra’s Lost Horizon, the passengers of a plane attacked after the takeoff in China are thrown together against their will only to be deposited in Shangri-La. During the life there, they realize that a family gathering should be about forming connections and taking time to consider one’s place in the family, in the community and even in the world.

The Human Comedy

Maybe as the finest film about the US “home front” during World War Two, The Human Comedy is a portrait of a family dealing with life after the oldest son is drafted into military service (兵役). Mickey Rooney plays the younger son missing his older brother but trying to get on with his life in high school.

Miracle on 34th Street

The Christmas classic was released in 1947, but it essentially set the stage for the 1950s. It’s about the birth of the post-war consumer culture, and how affection for family and friends can be best expressed by the act of spending money.

Mary Poppins

Sometimes a family needs to make a change but the Banks family is definitely in a rut. George seems to care more about his banking job than his wife and children. He needs to learn that sometimes all you need is a laugh for a laugh’s sake, tuppence(两便士) to feed the birds and the time to fly a kite. In the end, his change is as powerful as Ebenezer Scrooge’s.

Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope

Star Wars is about what happens after you make the choice to leave home for good. Of course, for Luke Skywalker, the choice to “take the first step into a larger world” is made for him when his family is killed. But his process of going out into the universe and discovering himself also involves gathering a new family.

21. Who of the following acted in one of the above films?

A. Mickey Rooney. B. Frank Capra. C. Luke Skywalker. D. Ebenezer Scrooge.

22. Which film attracts people loving Christmas most?

A. Lost Horizon. B. Mary Poppins

. C. Miracle on 34th Street. D. Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.

23. The passage is written to ________.

A. advertise some new films. B. interest foreign film lovers.

C. present some film standards. D. recommend some family films.

B

Benjamin Franklin clearly knew how to get things done. After scanning the long list of Benjamin Franklin’s achievements, one can only come to one conclusion that the American man probably never had a wasted day in his life. When he was 84 years old, he became a successful author, printer, politician, postmaster, inventor, musician, and diplomat.

There's much we can learn from Benjarin Frankin's work habits and opinions on life that can increase our own productivity. Here are some ways Franklin overcame lazy, wasted days.

Start a group and share knowledge. When Franklin was 21, he was a struggling printer in Philadelphia. To increase his connections and to learn more about his industry, he created a group. The group was in great need of books, but books were expensive. Franklin helped start a library where books were bought and lent to members. This sharing of knowledge, experience, and connections helped Franklin become a famous and respected printer in Philadelphia.

Attack opportunities. "To succeed," Franklin wrote,” jump as quickly at opportunities as you can." We can all agree, but when an opportunity comes we often look the other way. It's because the opportunity isn't dressed the way we expect. We often think that the opportunity was only in the form of a golden egg or a million-dollar lottery ticket or a new job offer. But more often than not, the opportunity comes in smaller, less beautiful packages.

Time is something in short supply. Franklin wrote “Lost time is never found again." This may sound like it came from the pen of a poet, but it's really an inspirational call to action. Franklin worked, created, and lived knowing that time is scarce. He never put off his work.

While Franklin was an able inventor we can be sure that his notebook contained a few unsuccessful ideas . Franklin wrote,“ Do not fear mistakes. You will know failure. Continue to reach out.'

24. Benjamin Franklin succeeded in many ways mainly because______.

A. he was very clever and popular. B. he could make good use of his time.

C. he often shared knowledge with others. D. he could do many things at the same time.

25. The underlined word “ industry” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to_____.

A. writing. B. invention. C. music . D. printing.

26. For many people who want to succeedopportunities_____.

A. are easy to catch hold of. B. are difficult to see and attack.

C. are often dressed the way we expect. D. always come in the form of a golden egg.

27. From the last paragraph we can learn_____.

A. Franklin wrote a lot of famous poems. B. Franklin sometimes wasted time.

C. Franklin never met with failures. D. Franklin learned from failures.

C

People generally tend to pick out the best-looking fruits and vegetables when shopping for produce, but Canadian supermarket chain Loblaws is attracting customers with badly-shaped and faulty produce at the price of 30% lower than normal-looking ones.

A trial run of the ugly food line, named “Naturally Imperfect”, began with only apples and tomatoes to choose from. Consumer demand has been so huge that Loblaws is going to introduce more unsightly vegetables and fruit options like onions and mushrooms. The line is available at other stores, including Real Canadian Superstore and Your Independent Grocer.

All the produce that will be sold through Naturally Imperfect would otherwise have been used in juices, sauces, or soups, or have not been harvested at all. The director Dan Branson explained that this program benefited both food producers who would otherwise have to let abnormal harvest go to waste, and consumers who could buy fresh produce at low prices. And he was right, given how popular the line has become.

“It really went well beyond our expectation,” Branson said. “I think it really spoke to the fact that Canadians are out there really looking for some options.”

Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin deep, but they also recognize that they can get the same flavor and nutritional benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response to the initial offering of apples and potatoes showed the opportunity to expand the line and offer more options at a greater price to Canadian families.

“If you grow produce in your backyard, there will be a lot of produce that won’t look as pretty as what you will see in a grocery store, said Branson. “And nature doesn''t grow everything perfectly. I’d like to think if somebody were to take a No Name Naturally Imperfect apple, put right beside a No.l apple, close their eyes and eat them, there would be no difference.”

28. Loblaws is different from other supermarkets in that .

A. more fruits are offered at lower prices

B. normal-looking produce is banned there

C. imperfect produce is sold at lower prices there

D. only apples and potatoes are sold every day

29. According to Paragraph 3, Branson''s program .

A. prevents people from wasting their food

D. enables consumers to eat more fresh produce

30. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. The ugly food line B. The food to be wasted

C. The abnormal harvest D. All the produce

31 What do Branson’s words in the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A. We should eat imperfect apples with our eyes closed.

B. The world is usually full of imperfect things.

C. Imperfect fruits are as tasty and nutritious as perfect ones.

D. The fruits grown by ourselves are more nutritious than those in the store.

D

Are Superheroes Good Role Models?

Superheroes are everywhere. But what effect, if any, do superheroes have on our behavior? Some experts believe superheroes may have a particularly important influence on children.

Children have very limited control over many areas of their lives. Therefore, pretending to be a superhero allows a child to act out and process any anxiety that they have, and thereby overcome or reduce hidden fears, says Dr. Amy Bailey, a clinical psychologist.

Bailey adds, “The risk to superhero play is that sometimes children’s behavior can become out of control and turn into chaotic play as a child becomes completely lost in these roles.” She advises parents to keep children away from more aggressive(暴力的) shows and to have children focus on “other positive characteristics of their favorite hero, such as their clever thinking and care of others.” Concern over the possible effect of aggressive behavior has led to some schools banning(禁止) superhero play from the classroom.

Other psychologists(心理学家) share this concern. Some point to the change of the superhero over time, and are dissatisfied with modern images. “There is a big difference in the movie superhero of today and the comic book superhero of yesterday,” says Sharon Lamb. She compares the selfish, playboy millionaire Tony Stark (Iron Man) to a superhero of the past, such as Superman. Superman, she points out, had a real job as a newspaper reporter and was devoted to fighting injustice(不公平). More recent characters such as Iron Man “take advantage of women, show off wealth, and show their manhood with high-powered guns.”

Jeff Greenberg, a social psychology professor, has his own idea of modern superheroes. According to him, superheroes give children confidence and can deliver a positive moral message. Many superheroes-such as Spider-Man or Superman-use their powers to protect the weak. And more modern superheroes such as Daredevil, who is blind, and Charles Xavier (Professor X), who is disabled, bring diversity(多样性) and present positive images of disability.

32. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Children should be kept away from superhero movies.

C. The concept of the superhero has changed over time.

D. Superheroes can encourage children to be confident.

1. He is self-centered and is not a good role model for children.

第二节(共5小题,每题2.分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项

You only live once, and life is short. It’s easy to look at people who are happy and assume that they don’t understand your pain. The older you get, the more you realize that happiness takes work. People who smile in public have been through as much as people who cry, scream, etc. 36 So how can you live life to the fullest? Here are some tips to help you out:

Decide what’s important to you. It doesn’t matter what it is. 37 Your parents, friends and society in general all have their opinions, but you’re the only person who will be around for every moment of your life. Do what makes you happy, and everything else will fall into place.

Ready to take risks. Sometimes, there’s danger involved in life, but every reward carries risk with it. 38 However, if you never take risks, you’ll never get anywhere in life. When people look back on their lives, they regret the chances they didn’t take more than the ones they did.

Ignore the haters. No matter what you decide to do with your life, there will always be someone around to point out the many ways you will fail. Know that every winner loses, but not every loser wins. 39 Instead, they keep pushing through failure.

40 Your being right about something doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to look at it. Listening to ideas you don’t agree with or understand keeps your brain active and healthy.

A. Keep an open mind.

B. Successful people don’t start out successful.

C. Don’t do what you think people want you to do.

D. It is true that some actions might have bad results.

E. They just have the courage and strength to smile through it.
