Check off the Four Corners

Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico are not simply the only four American states that meet at a single point, but they also host the US's greatest concentration of national parks.

This is the place to come for that classic scene of the lonely desert road extending to the horizon. On your way, take in

such sights as the Monument Valley and the mysterious remains of centuries-old civilizations in Colorado's Mesa Verde.

Find beauty in the desert

With many miles of excellent roads, a self-drive trip in Namibia makes total sense. Plan a route north from capital Windhoek to wildlife-rich Etosha National Park , before crossing Damaraland to reach the Skeleton Coast. The most impressive desert views are in the Namib-Naulduft National Park to the south. At Sossusvlei, the landscape takes on the quality of a surrealist (超现实的) painting.

Cross half a continent

The 1,761-mile-long Stuart Highway runs north to south through Australia's Red Centre. It is not a road where every turn shows new wonders; the reward of this trip comes in the gradual change in your surroundings, from red soils' in Australia's outback to the tropical (热带的) leaves of the Indian Ocean coast.

Take the high road

Among all the crashing of continental plates that raised up the Canadian Rockies, a 144-mile route was left more or less clear at their center. The Ice fields Parkway now passes through this amazing scenery; with the access it brings to icy lakes, waterfalls and ice fields, the section between Banff and Jasper has a good claim to being the most scenic in the world.

On a comfortable sunny Sunday, I was going to meet an old university friend I hadn't seen for years, and was really excited to hear all his news. My train was running a little late, but that was no big problem-I could text him to say I would be delayed. He would understand. But where was my mobile phone? I had that familiar sinking feeling. Yes, I'd left it at home.

No mobile phone. I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling anxious, on edge and worried when I don't have my phone with me.

In fact, I know I'm not alone: two-thirds of us experience this "nomophobia".

That's according to a study which surveyed 1,000 people in the UK about their relationship with mobile phones, which says we check our mobile phones 34 times a day, that women are more "nomophobia" than men, and that 18-24-year-olds are the most likely to suffer fear of being without their mobiles: 77% of them say they are unable to be apart from their phones for more than a few minutes.

Do you have a "nomophobia"?

●You never turn your phone off.

●You obsessively (若迷似地) check for texts, missed calls and emails.

●You always take your phone to the bathroom with you.

●You never let the battery out.

It's funny to think that around 20 years ago the only people with mobile phones would be businesspersons carrying their large, plastic "bricks". Of course, these days, mobile phones are everywhere. Its subscriptions has outnumbered people across the world.

And when there are more phones than people in the world, maybe it's time to ask who really is in charge? Are you in control of your phone, or does your phone control you? So, what happened with my university friend? When I arrived a few minutes late he just laughed and said: "You haven't changed at all—still always late!" And we had a great afternoon catching up, full of jokes and stories, with no interruptions and no nagging ( ) desire to check my phone.

Not having it with me felt strangely liberating. Maybe I'll leave it at home on purpose next time.

4.What does the underlined word "nomophobia" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The fear of being out of mobile phone contact. B.The addiction to keeping mobile phones at hand. C.The feeling of being alone and left behind. D.The suffering of being anxious and worried.

5.Why dos the author mention businesspersons in the passage?

A.To show only they preferred mobile phones. B.To imply the phones are too heavy to carry.

C.To suggest mobile phones weren't welcome. D.To indicate mobile phones were inconvenient to use.

6.How about the author's meeting his friend?

A.Terrible. B.Impressive. C.Regretful. D.Anxious.

7.What's the best title for the passage?

A.The Development of Mobile Phones. B.Meeting an Old University Friend

C.Being without My Mobile Phone D.Using Mobile Phones or Not

C

The 700 or so residents of a fishing village and the rest of an island in the middle of Chesapeake Bay may turn out to be the first citizens of the continental United States to experience rising seas, concludes a report by oceanographer David M. Schulte and two fellow scientists with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The study involved Tangier Island and its nearby, smaller islands, the last inhabited islands in Virginia waters in the Chesapeake Bay. The islands' landmass has decreased by 66.75 percent since 1850.

Researchers looked at three situations of sea level rise (SLR): low, mid and high. In the mid-range SLR version, the islands' remaining landmass would largely be lost in 50 years and the town there would need to be abandoned. Under the situation of high SLR, much of the land would be lost within 25 years.

Many of the islanders are multiple-generation residents. Currently, about 700 people are Tangier residents, and they are largely fishermen. Captain John Smith, of Jamestown, is thought to be the first white man who set foot on the island 400 or so years ago. Carol Pruitt-Moore, who is a seventh generation Tangier islander, told an Associated Press reporter: "I think it'll be less than 50 years. We are away from being washed away or being forced to leave."Two things are affecting the islands: climate change and the sinking of the bay. In the study, after analyzing maps and aerial photos of the islands, 1850 through 2013, the study authors made a model to predict the lifespan of the islands. They also say that if other measures were built, costing $30 million to $40 million, perhaps Tangier could stay above water another 50 years.

"The Tangier Islands and the town are running out of time, and if no action is taken, the citizens of Tangier may become the first climate change refugees in the continental USA," as the report concludes.

8.According to the research we can know that .

A.Chesapeake Bay will disappear in 25 years

B.the islands' landmass has decreased over 150 years

C.the islanders are very worried about their future

D.Tangier will be possibly moved to other place soon

9.What about the Tangier residents when they face the rising seas?

A.They are too anxious to leave the islands. B.They are full with endless complaint.

C.They feel much too sad and helpless. D.They are just thinking what to do at present

10.What if some measures were to be taken?

A.Tangier would exist above the sea forever B.An enormous investment would be needed.

C.The sinking of the bay would be prevented. D.Tangier would be a model all over the world.

11.Where can we probably read the passage?

A.A science magazine. B.A Travel brochure. C.A Journal Nature D.A story book.

D

In general, the local food system is associated with organic agriculture because of its connection to smaller family farms that typically use these types of methods. The system means buying a food grown or made close to your home, or at least within your regional area. For fruits and vegetables, this means supporting a nearby farm that controlled every aspect of growing the crop.

When food is grown in your community, it will reach you within a day or two of being picked, meaning peak flavor and nutritional value. Peaches will be sweeter, and meats, cheeses, breads and eggs will be fresher and more flavorful than anything found in the grocery store.

Local farmers' markets provide spaces for families and individuals to deal with one another. Neighbors get to know each other another along with their farmer, baker and cheese-maker. When you buy food from a local maker or grower, you re-establish a time-honored connection between the provider and the eater. Knowing your farmers means learning about the seasons, the weather and the wonder that is growing food. It is the opportunity to teach children that food comes not from a box but soil, water, sun and lots of hard work.

Shopping local brings together folks who care about truly nourishing people in the community; vendors and their customers enjoy relationships built on trust and understanding, relying on one another to keep their families healthy and thriving.

Local farmers and producers want you to ask questions and visit; they're passionate about providing the highest-quality product, wanting you to love it as much as they do. When you buy local, you are given the luxury of knowing your grower or maker, visiting them, asking how their product is made & seeing for yourself how your food comes to be. Supporting local food helps ensure there to be farms in your community tomorrow, preserving natural landscapes and providing abundant, wholesome and delicious food for future generations.

12.What is the main idea of the passage above?

A.Local food tastes better and is good for you. B.Local food cost you more but tastes better.

C.Local food is produced in a new way. D.Local food helps people make friends.

13.What does it mean if you buy the local food?

A.You have the healthiest food in the world.

B.You can learn to grow the crops easily.

C.You give your assistance to the local farmers.

D.You can gain a good reputation in your community.

14.What are the benefits if you know the local farmers?

A.Being honored by farmers and making more friends

B.Knowing more providers and getting a bargain

C.Enlarging knowledge and having a time to teach kids

D.Going into nature and growing food in boxes.

15.What will you learn if you contact local producers?

A.They all get a good knowledge of the local customers.

B.They in fact live in a luxurious and comfortable life.

C.They think more of the health of future generations.

D.They are simple, hospitable and ready to offer help.

How to Give First Aid for a Stroke Victim

First aid is about more than bandaging a cut or wrapping a sprained ankle. It's any kind of emergency care given to someone injured or ill until emergency workers arrive at the scene. 16 .

A stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is suddenly stopped or interrupted. 17 . More specifically, when blood flow can't reach a certain region of the brain, anything controlled in that area will be unable to function. Because one side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body, 18 , the left side will be impaired (受损的), causing symptoms like paralysis on the left side of the body, vision problems, memory loss, and slowed reflexes. If treatment isn't received and blood flow continues to be impaired, death or permanent disability can occur.

19 . Fortunately, acting fast is easier to do when you remember the FAST acronym for recognizing the signs of a stroke. If someone's face appears to be drooping, or their smile is uneven, this is a sign that they aren't getting blood flow to one side of their brain. 20 If you aren't sure, ask the person to raise their arms. Delayed speech is a sign of a stroke. Ask the person to repeat a few words and listen carefully to how they are speaking. When someone you're with is experiencing these symptoms, you have to act quickly to get them help. After calling emergency services, it's important to begin doing first aid to the victim.

A.if one gets hurt in the left side of the head

B.if a stroke occurs on the right side of the brain

C.Weakness in the arm is another cause for concern

D.When blood is cut off to the brain, the cells lack oxygen and can die

E.Don’t be buried and worried if you find someone is calling for help

F.When someone is having a stroke, acting fast is essential to the victim.

G.One of the most important times to perform first aid is when someone is showing signs of a stroke

Ever since I was a boy I have loved and collected Native American stories. Their wisdom and love of nature have

He said, "My child, the battle is 25 two 'wolves' that live inside us all. One is fear, anger, hatred, self-pity, and unhappiness. 26 is love, laughter, joy, hope, peace, kindness, and happiness." The grandson 27 this for a long time and then asked his grandfather which wolf would win. The elder 28 said, "The one you really 29 ."

I think that most of the problems worldwide 30 from the fact that far too many of us often feed the 31 wolf. We let our fears 32 us. We react with anger. We hate those who are 33 from us.
