In a small village in India, there lived a man. He would do nothing all day but daydream. Whenever he was hungry, he would go out, beg for (乞讨) food, come back and hang around.

One sunny afternoon, he was very hungry. With great difficulty, he got up, took out a bowl and went out to beg. By begging the whole day, he finally got a pot full of milk. He hung this pot on the ceiling, lay down on his bed and started daydreaming again.

“This pot of milk is going to make me rich,” he thought. “I can make butter from the milk. Then I will be able to make ghee(印度酥油) and go to the market and sell the ghee,” his dream continued. “With the money I get, I will buy a pair of goats. They will have kids after six months. Soon I would have a large number of goats.”

“Then I will continue my business. I will buy some more cows and own a farmhouse. I will start a dairy farm(奶牛场). Once I earn a handsome amount I will employ people in my farm. I can also open a sweet shop in the middle of the village, I will make sweets out of the cow’s milk,”the man kept smiling to himself.

“How smart I am,” he thought. Lost in his thoughts, he kicked out his foot, broke the pot and drenched(弄湿) himself in milk. He saw the broken pot and cried. He lost whatever he had.

“Why do birds sing?” I asked a group of children. “To attract metes(配偶)!” answered a boy. A 4-year-old girl added shyly, “birds sing because they are happy, and they want to make us happy, too.” I think both answers are probably true in a way. If birds sing happily, it shows all is good in the forest: no predators (捕食者) are present, and the birds can feed, sing and do other bird things. The sound of a relaxed robin(知更鸟) singing is easy to understand because it makes us feel this way too—it’s a sound that lifts our own hearts when we hear it.

What happens when a predator comes into their areas? The nearby birds quickly give an alarm(警报) call, a short sound that warns, “Danger is coming!” On hearing the sound, the other birds stop singing and fly away, the deer lift their heads and stop moving and the rabbits run into the bushes. Suddenly, the forest becomes silent.

When humans walk through the woods in a hurry or while talking with a friend, we don’t see much wildlife. We may think that there aren’t many animals living there, but more likely, they know we are coming and hide minutes before our arrival. But if we learn to avoid setting off alarms, we can see many more wild animals without frightening them. To practice, find a place in a park and sit quietly for an hour. Take notes as the birds begin to relax and sing again. When I do this, I am always surprised at the wonderful thing animals will do when humans stay still (不动的) long enough.

39. In the writer’s opinion, the children’s answers to his question are .

A. funny B. interesting C. honest D. reasonable

40. Why can’t we see much wildlife in the woods from this passage?

A. Because we have set off alarms. B. Because we fail to give warnings.

C. Because we come at the wrong time. D. Because few animals live there.

41. The purpose of the last paragraph is to .

A. show people how and when birds sing.

B. ask people to learn something about birds.

C. tell people how to protect birds in the wild.

D. advise people to enjoy the songs of birds.

A. The life of birds. B. How birds sing in the forest.

C. Birds in the forest. D. The messages in birds’ singing.

In Europe, small cars have always been more popular than large cars. In the United States, large cars and midsize cars are more popular than smaller cars. As a result, European automakers used to make different kinds of small cars while American automakers used to build bigger, heavier cars. However, these days, automakers in both America and Europe produce cars of different sizes. This is because most automakers export their cars all over the world.

The price of gasoline (汽油)is one reason for differences in car choices. Since gasoline is more expensive in Europe, many Europeans want smaller, lighter cars that will travel a long way on a gallon(加仑)of gasoline.

Other reasons also enter into the big or little car decision. Many European cities have narrow, winding(弯曲的) streets. In these cities a small car is easier to control than a large one.

For a long time, few Americans bought small cars. Instead they chose large cars, because these roomy cars were more comfortable for large families and long trips. Some people also liked the powerful engines(发动机) that large cars had. Since gasoline was cheap, drivers did not mind that the large cars used a lot of gasoline.

But in the 1970s, there were gasoline shortages in the United States. The price of gasoline went up. Though large cars were still more popular than smaller cars, sales of small cars increased. Some people also bought small cars because these cars caused less air pollution than larger cars.

Today, Americans' car preferences are still changing. Though Americans are still buying many small cars, the fastest growing sales are for certain kinds of large cars. These types of cars are called minivans and sport utility vehicles(SUV). They are very popular today. But of course, that could change tomorrow.

43. In the 1970s, .

A. large cars were less popular than smaller cars.

B. European cars finally came to the United States.

C. the price of gasoline went up in the United States.

D. people in the United States stopped buying small cars.

44. Which of the following does the article lead you to believe?

A. Sport utility vehicles small cars.

B. Minivans are becoming less popular.

C. European car companies sell many cars in America.

D. Cars with powerful engines caused less air pollution.

45. What does “roomy” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. having much space B. having little space

C. having a large room D. having a small room

Letter A

Young people are always told that they should make the most of their time, which they will never be as free again. So, my question is-why fill up all this free time with housework. Parents expect their children to get good grades, be good at sports, and be popular with other kids. However, there is not enough time in the day to do these things and then do housework as well. It’s not fair to expect teenagers to give up their precious time to do boring housework. Parents and children both have jobs. Parents’ jobs are in the workplace. Their children’s jobs are at school.

The only difference is that parents get paid and children don’t. Parents say that they make their kids do housework to teach them responsibility. But this is just a trick. Parents trick their kids into doing housework because they are lazy.

Yours

Overloaded

Letter B

Both parents and children have jobs. The parent’s job is to go to work to earn moneyThe child’s job is to go to schoolBut we all get hungrySomeone has to cook the meals and clean up afterward. We all wear clothes that get dirty. Someone has to wash them, iron them, and put them awayChildren work from 9 until 4Parents work from 8 until 6. Sure, after 4 o’clock, children have homework. But after 6, parents have homework too. They have to do the shopping, go to the bank, pay the bills, and help their kids with their own homework!

I think it’s only fair that teenagers help out a bit at home. They might not like it, but it’s good for them. It teaches them how to look after themselves. This is really important when they leave home to go to college or to live on their own

Sincerely

Overworked
