Beldon and Canfield are two seashore towns not far apart. Both towns have many hotels，and in summer the hotels are full of holiday - makers and other people.

Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day this news appeared on Page Two of the town’s newspaper The Beldon Post:

Fire at Seabreeze

Late last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our visitors "Please don’t smoke cigarettes in bed."  This was Beldon’s first hotel fire for five years.

The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on Page One:

                 Another Beldon Hotel Catches Fire

 Last night Beldon firemen arrived just too late to save clothing bedclothes and some furniture at the Seabreeze Hotel. An angry holiday-maker said “ An electric lamp probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I turned the bedside light on I heard a funny noise from the lamp.” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield.

Fear is something that everyone has to face, and in some cases, it can even help us safe. However, it once influenced my life severely. I had a tough battle a____1___ it.

Valentine’s Day is a popular occasion, especially young people throughout the world like to celebrate it.

There are three legends about Saint Valentine. The first legend is about the priest(牧师) Valentine. Valentine was arrested and put into prison because he did not believe in the Roman gods. After being in prison for many years, he was taken to meet Claudius II; emperor of Rome. Valentine stood bravely and still refused to worship any other gods but his own. Claudius II was so angry that he made up his mind to kill Valentine.

Valentine had become friends with the daughter of one of the prison guards. She was blind. Valentine sent her a note before he was killed. When the girl opened the note, she suddenly got her sight. The sight was signed ” from your Valentine”. Saint Valentine died on Februray 14, 271. A Pope then made February 14 a special day in memory of Saint Valentine.

The second legend began with Claudius II’s interest in building a great army. He felt that married men would not be brave soldiers because they would think about their wives and families, so he didn’t allow young couples to marry. Valentine had great sympathy for the young couples who wanted to marry. He helped them to marry in secret. However, Valentine’s service was discovered and he was put to death for breaking the law.

The third legend is about Valentine’s love for flowers. He had a lovely flower garden and he allowed children to play in it so that they could enjoy the beautiful and fragrance of these flowers. When Valentine was in prison, the children would bring him flowers from his garden with notes saying how they loved and missed him.

It is difficult to say which legend is the right one and which is not. It is not important, anyway. What is important is to know that Valentine was a great man who believed in love.
