Dance is one of the most wonderful forms of human communication. In many cultures, dance has both historic and cultural significance, which is communicated through learned gestures and expressions. Here are a bit more details about three of the worlds most beautiful dances.

Kathakali

Kathakali is a storytelling dance, during which performers use a variety of gestures, and eyes and facial expressions to communicate meanings. Costumes, hair styles, makeup and face paint, and jewelry also all hold specific meanings in the performance of kathakali. There are nine facial expressions used to express emotions ranging from sadness and anger to curiosity. Through their expressions, it should be completely clear to the viewer what the performer is intending to convey.

Tango

The dance has its roots in an African slave dance called candombe, which is also a type of music. One key factor of a candombe performance is a partnered dance, which has over time developed into the modern tango. If you can keep your eyes on one part of the tango, just focus on the dancers legs and feet. The tango is typically performed low to the ground, with both performers step-work often taking place at the same time. Its complex and communicative.

Flamenco

One of the most interesting facts about the flamenco is that it began as a song. Over time, flamenco developed to include its now-famous passionate accompanying dance. One of the key factors of flamenco is palmas. It may look like simple, rhythmic clapping, but palmas are performed at different speeds, and strengths, and it is essential that the flamenco dancer understands how to make use of his or her hands as part of the performance.

In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, you can find Jamey Turner playing an unusual musical instrument, the glass harp(竖琴). A glass harp is made up of different sized drinking glasses, each filled with water.

Turner makes music by running his fingers over the tops of the glasses. By doing so, each glass makes a different musical sound. Visitors to Alexandria like what they see and hear. They thank Turner by leaving a dollar or more in his box for donations. Jamey Turner is 78 years old. Turner became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six, when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for 50 years.

Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound. Adding water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while the larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.

Turner always uses low-priced glass because it sounds better than costly crystal(水晶) and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores. He decides if they produce the right sound by rubbing his finger over the top of them.

The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote music for the instrument. There have been about 400 pieces of music written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play the glass harp these days, but Turner says he sees videos of people experimenting with the instrument on YouTube. He hopes the next generation will continue making its music.

4. What do visitors think of Jamey Turners performance?

A. Boring. B. Attractive. C. Special. D. Common.

5. How can Jamey Turner change the sounds of the glasses?

A. By beating the glasses in different parts. B. By placing the glasses on a wooden board.

C. By adding or reducing water in the glasses. D. By holding different glasses with rubber bands.

6. What may be Jamey Turners real worry about the glass harp?

A. Little music is written for the instrument.

B. People are trying to play the instrument online.

C. Few people are playing the instrument these days.

D. The instrument cannot produce some beautiful sounds.

7. What is the best title for this text?

A. Making Music by Playing Glasses B. Special Sounds from Glasses

C. Devotion to Playing Glasses for Fun D. Fingers over the Tops of the Glasses

Maybe you will say a journalists duty is to report news with social significance. There is hardly any reason for journalists to express their personal opinion on issues or facts. Forming a judgment or an opinion or idea based on a journalistic report is the readers privilege. Journalists also need to dig deep so as to look into the roots, inviting the readers to have a look at it. At this time, a report will become meaningful.

Journalists must not give much importance to news that doesnt have much significance in the lives of the readers and the audience. This sort of practice primarily comes from the desire to attract attention of the latter, which overshadows the primary responsibility of presenting important facts that concern the readers and the audience in one way or the other.

Its only the readers and the viewers who are the judges; journalists should let them pass their judgment on various issues. Sometimes journalists try hard to influence public opinion in favor of a particular side of an issue; this is a wrong practice, especially if the side the media takes is the wrong one, and the public opinion will be in favor of that particular side in conse- quence of such role on the part of the media.

A proper understanding of which type of news is more important and the ability for grading news are the main character of true journalism. The social significance of a news item that does not profit us in the least (although, it might make us amused or sad in an indifferent way) is far less than that of a news item that makes us feel worried about our personal safety.

Most of us are afraid of the truth, because we consider it as too terrifying to know—something that is better hidden than revealed. However, the fundamental responsibility of a journalist is to reveal the facts in all their aspects exposing the hard and harsh reality.

8. We can learn from the first paragraph that a meaningful report should ____________.

A. bring about society changes B. contain the stories hidden behind

C. lead to a good judgment or an idea D. contain the scientific research

9. What is the primary responsibility of a journalist?

A. Presenting significant facts as it is. B. Attracting the publics attention.

C. Influencing the readers life. D. Choosing proper news to report.

10. Which of the following is an incorrect practice for journalists?

A. Basing their reports unclearly. B. Convincing the public of the facts.

C. Reporting news on a particular side. D. Inviting readers to judge the facts.

11. What does the underlined phrase hard and harsh in Paragraph 5 mean?

A. Fanciful. B. Serious. C. Fantastic. D. Objective.

It has been four years since the Flashfood App was set to hit Canadian grocery stores and make it easier for shoppers to buy soon-to-expiry (保质期) food at a discount. Much to my delight, I heard it advertised recently on a radio station and figured it’s time for an update, especially since people became more aware of food waste’s role in the climate crisis.

The first thing I did was download the App. I hadn’t done it before because it was limited to a few locations, but now it’s all over Canada. I could see immediately that many brands of yogurt are all marked down 50 percent. Users pay for the food using the App, and then pick it up at a marked location in the store. There is no need for you to worry about them actually being bad.

It makes sense for retailers to get behind this App because it offers a win-win situation for everyone involved. Flashfood sells 75% of the products made available through its App while saving consumers an average of 50% on those grocery items, and it has 300,000 active users right now. That number is expected to grow naturally as Flashfood partners with more grocers.

“As a food retailer, we are in the business of providing food, not wasting it. The Flashfood program allows us to provide our customers with a convenient and environmentally sustainable (可持续的) way to purchase food. Loblaw sells 77% of the items it puts on Flashfood, moving an average of 800 to 1,000 worth of goods weekly at each of its largest stores,” said Gord Chem, senior VP with Loblaw’s Real Canadian Superstores.

I love looking for discount deals at the grocery store and always keep an eye out for the hot pink clearance stickers. But it’s always random, and I never know what I’m going to get from week to week. The appeal of Flashfood is that I can see what’s available, pre-purchase it, and leave it off my shopping list.

12. What can we know about the food on the Flashfood?

A. It’s delivered directly to the customers. B. Much of it is charged at half the price.

C. Users can pay for it in the marked store. D. It’ll be a month away before it goes bad.

13. According to Gord Chem, the Flashfood is ______________.

A. beneficial B. popular C. creative D. reliable

14. How is the advantage of Flashfood introduced in the last paragraph?

A. By listing some examples. B. By making a comparison.

C. By explaining the cause. D. By introducing the result.

15. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Customers can buy much cheaper food on a recent app.

B. A win-win situation has been set for Canadians involved.

C. Canadians have a smart approach to reducing food waste.

D. Canadians adopt a new way of protecting the environment.

Do you always concern yourself with your kid’s play dates? Do you send them upstairs to get changed? ____16____ Put that red pen back in your purse, because micromanaging your kids is likely to do more harm than good.

Micromanaging or over-parenting comes in many forms. However it presents itself, it can give children the impression that parents don’t have confidence in them, and this can lead to problems. Parents who micromanage their kids sometimes struggle with a sense of control. ____17____

So what should parents do? For modern parents, it can be a balance between healthy involvement in your kid's life and micromanaging. It can be especially difficult to know where the line is when it comes to the internet. We live in a digital age. ____18____ To help you walk that fine line, parents should be frank about it. If they're hiding their phone or acting secretively, a slightly different conversation about the health of their online activity might be needed.

Breaking a micromanaging habit isn't easy. ____19____ You could relax your grip in fairly inconsequential areas, like letting your child decide what clothes to wear. The plus side is that if you back off about little things, your words might carry more weight when it comes to the big things. ____20____ Therefore, you can let your children succeed, fail, and figure out life on their own.

A. But like any bad habit, start small.

B. Do you like talking with your kids?

C. Micromanaging can be a sign of anxiety in them.

It was a lazy Sunday morning, the type of day that getting out of bed requires an effort. When Marilyn and I entered the kitchen, Lori was already at the table doing her homework. Seeing us coming, she, suddenly, stood and faced me, “Why are there more pictures of Lisa than there are of me?” she asked. Lisa is our older daughter.

I stared back, not understanding the question. Lori turned and left the room. Caught off-guard by the question, I looked at Marilyn. “Are there more pictures of Lisa than of Lori?” Marilyn shrugged and raised her eyebrows in a motion of puzzlement. “Are you aware that there are more pictures of Lisa than Lori?” I added.

Marilyn said, “I’ve never counted them. I don’t know.”

Marilyn’s answer was the same as my thoughts, “I hadn’t realized that there was any significant difference. Now why would Lori ask such a question?” I asked.

Marilyn just shook her head and stared back at me. After a few minutes of thought she said, “When Lisa was born, you were taking photographs. You hardly went anywhere without a camera. When Lori was born, you were involved in colored slides (幻灯片). There must be hundreds of slides of Lori somewhere in the house that Lori has never seen or doesn’t remember.”

After digesting Marilyn’s remarks, I agreed. “After Lori leaves, we’ll look for those slides. Who knows, we may find more slides of Lori than pictures of Lisa,” I joked.

Later that afternoon, when we were alone, we went into the basement where we had stored the boxes that we had brought from our previous home. It wasn’t long before we discovered the trays of slides, and for the rest of the afternoon we looked at each tray, pointing out those slides that highlighted Lori.

“What are you going to do?” Marilyn asked.

“It’s her birthday in a few weeks,” I said, “We’ll select about one hundred slides with Lori and convert them into pictures, put them into an album and give to her as a gift. I don’t know if the album will answer her question, but at least she’ll know that we care enough to find her an answer.”

Paragraph 1:

Over the next few days, we secretly went through all of our slides.___________________

Paragraph 2:

On November 24, before leaving for work, I opened her door and slipped the album inside.

“基础写作”参考范文:

Dear Tom,

Nice to hear from you. Knowing from your last letter that you are curious about one of my unforgettable experiences in high school, I am writing to share one with you.

When I was in Senior II, I got a chance to study in your country -- the UK for three months as an exchange student. What impressed me most was the various activities in and after class. We had group discussions and played games with classmates to enjoy the cultural diversity. I developed a deep friendship with many UK students from varied backgrounds, which helped me understand the country better. Through the three months’ study, not only did I get to know the cultural differences, but I also learned how to co-operate with others.

Looking forward to your early reply and sharing your unforgettable experience.

Yours,

Li Hua

“读后续写”参考范文

Over the next few days, we secretly went through all of our slides. We kept on selecting and rejecting pictures until we were satisfied. Those pictures brought back memories of the early years of our marriage and we hoped they showed how we felt about our daughter. Marilyn had them converted into photographs. Then, we placed them into an album with a birthday card explaining why her mother and I had put the album together. When the album was finally finished, we hid the book until her birthday.

On November 24, before leaving for work, I opened her door and slipped the album inside. Then I left the house and drove to work. I was about to enter the office when the telephone rang. I picked up the receiver, and on the other end of the receiver, a tiny voice spoke, “I love you, Daddy,” she said and disconnected. The receiver remained against my ear for a few more minutes before I placed it on the telephone. Our message had been delivered and acknowledged.
