By asking important questions and 16 the answers, it is possible to make amazing discoveries. Sometimes a scientist is 17 to answer his own question, but if he has taken good notes, another scientist may keep studying later and use his notes to find the 18 . Every year there is new knowledge.

When you use the scientific method to 19 an experiment, you start by making observations(观察) about something that interests you. Based on your observations, you make a hypothesis (假设). This is using what you know to make a smart 20 about what you think could happen. Then you are 21 to begin your experiment. Yesterday I met an old customer in a store. He had been a very rude and loud young man, who scared some of the staff when he came to my employment agency ( 职业介绍所). So I came to the front desk to talk with him and brought him to my office. We talked about his needs and then I helped him to the best of my ability. He soon found employment. I was proud of it , which was one of my most successful cases.

This was over 4 years ago.

Anyway, yesterday he saw me at the store and came up to ask me what I was doing and I joked “Being broke (破产)!” We laughed and talked for a minute and then he went away. A couple minutes later, I was still shopping and saw him coming towards me. He stopped and asked, “Do you need some help?” and then he pulled out much money out of his shirt pocket, and continued, “Maybe I can help.” I replied, “No, thank you, really. I’m fine!”

“Oh, OK,” he said, “because you mentioned being broke and I just thought maybe I could help you out, like you helped me out once.”

“That’s very kind of you,” I replied, “but really, I’m fine.” In fact, I was really shocked. I couldn’t believe that he took my joke seriously.

Then he looked straight at me and said, “Well, I wouldn’t have had this without your help. When I really needed help you were there and thought if you were in trouble, I could help.”

I thanked him again, and told him I didn’t really need help. It was a very moving gesture coming from such a gruff (冷漠的) person and it almost made me cry. It just reminds me that it’ s always worth taking time and showing kindness to a person.

On a Saturday morning in New YorkNina Roedeler walks to Astoria Park. It's a rainy day, and there are not many people in the street. She enjoys the quiet. A little before 10 p.m., she reached a folding table set up on a patch of grass.

Morning, Jen!” Nina greets the volunteer who will help sign people in and out and write down their information. Then she walks over to a truck. Nina pulls the doors open, looking at each of these black boxes.

This is the reason why she comes here: the dogs.

Nina never kept the dogs in the past. She had a rabbit for a short time, but that was all her family had room for in their small apartment in Germany. It wasn't until she moved to New York City as an adult that she wanted to keep a dog. Then Hurricane Sandy hit. Friends with Four Paws is a non-profit(非营利的) organization. It saves dogs in Oklahoma, takes care of their medical needs, and then places them in loving homes across the country. Mobile phones are more important than ever in the daily lives of students, but how they use them has changed greatly in the past six years. While phones are still widely used for communication, a recent study has found that most students think talking on mobile phones is now old-fashioned.

London University researchers surveyed 1055 young people aged 13 to 18 about their mobile phone habits. The researchers divided mobile use into “communication” and “entertainment”. Communication included talking on the phone and writing messages using texting (短信) or chatting software. Entertainment was made up of playing games, watching movies, listening to music and surfing the Internet. The findings were then compared to a 2008 study, to see what changed. The results are shown below:

Perhaps most surprising is how little time students spend talking on their phones these days. Six years ago, the average student spent 36% of their mobile phone time making or receiving calls. In 2014, only 10% of time was used for talking. When students use their phones to communicate, more and more often it is done by using chat software like qq or WeChat.

“Communication is still an important function of mobile phones. But now mobile phones are being used more for entertainment than for communication,” said Dr Harry Lectre, the research leader.

As we all know, the world’s population is growing rapidly. By the year 2050 it is estimated(估计that the world’s population will reach nine billion. At the same time, there is no doubt that people in developed countries have a higher living standard. But there is an interesting question: what will happen if people in poorer countries raise their living standard and need more meat in their diet? Imagine trying to feed nine billion people with enough meat. In fact, it’s simply impossible.

Australian journalist and science writer, Julian Cribb, explains the challenges the world faces in feeding nine billion people by the year 2050. He says there is a major problem in the current food system in the developed world, at least. As more and more people move towards city centers, they know less and less where their food comes from. Most of them think food simply grows on supermarket shelves, and they don't consider the environmental effects of food production.

Food has many hidden cost that many people don’t know: huge amounts of water, energy use and land degradation(退化. Consumers add their own costs by simply throwing away a lot of food. The figures(数字) for food waste in the world are staggering.

To solve this problem of public ignorance (忽略) about food, Cribb suggests that food should be taught as a subject at primary schools. This would help the future generation deal with the world’s coming food challenges better. This can also help to raise a generation of educated consumers, more productive farmers, and so on.

Cribb offers other solutions and suggestions as well. One is to increase the funding(资金)for agricultural science, which has been falling in recent years. He suggests that organic farming should be understood on a scientific basis, changing people’s thinking to a new form of “environmental agriculture” to get the very best out of organic farming systems. He says we should stop wasting food and learn how to grow food more cheaply. We should use less water, as water is one of the main inputs (投入) into food production. Cribb also suggests eating more fruit and vegetables. Because it costs much to raise chickens, sheep, cows etc. and provide meat for people.

( ) 41. What is the major problem of the food system in developed countries according to Paragraph 2?

A. An increasing ignorance about the ways of food production.

B. An increasing number of people moving to city centers.

C. Food production does harm to the environment.

D. The cost of food production is increasing

( ) 42. What is the meaning of the underlined word “staggering in the third paragraph?

A. Confusing.

B. Surprising.

C. Interesting.

D. Pleasing

( ) 43. According to Julian Cribb, what is the aim of making food a subject at school?

A. To teach students about the food problems.

B. To help students understand how to grow food.

C. To encourage students to be farmers in the future.

D. To tell students where their food comes from.

( ) 44. Which of the following may the writer disagree with?

A. The public should save food and water.

B. Organic agriculture costs a lot of resources.

C. More money should be used for agricultural science.

D. People should eat less meat but more fruit and vegetables

( ) 45. What is the passage mainly about?

A. The effects of agriculture on the environment.

B. The effects of the world’s population on agriculture.

These days in China, iPad has been used in class in many schools. In their experience, there are many advantages in using iPad. It provides students with background information such as pictures, stories and videos. Whats more, it’s small and easy to carry. Therefore, students can study with them anytime anywhere.

However, every coin has two sides. Students may use them to play games or do something else in class, stopping themselves from focusing on class. What worse, it may do harm to their eyes if they use iPad for a long time.

In my opinion, it’s necessary for us to learn how to use iPad in a proper way, since it’s a great tool. Used properly, iPad will definitely benefit our study.
