When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake.
That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm.
Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My
mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad.
Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cottage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind.
“Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror.
My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away.
“Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said. 4. What did the family do before the storm came
A. They left the motels.

B. They stayed on the beach.
C. They packed up the cars. D. They visited their neighbors.
5. What was the family’s immediate action when they saw the tornado approach
A. Running away at once. B. Praying in silent terror.
C. Crawling on the ground. D. Closing their eyes tightly.
6. Where did the family stay in the storm
A. Inside the car. B. In a basement. C. Under a deck. D. Behind a door. 7. What can be the best title for the text
A. Life on the beach C. An Unusual Cottage
C

B. Surviving a Storm D. My Admirable Family

China used to be called the “Kingdom of Bicycles”, but since then, cars have taken over the country. There are too many vehicles and pedestrians in the street now, so the roads are crowded nearly all the time, and even going a few kilometers can take up to an hour, which can explain the fact that it’s very difficult to travel across major Chinese cities.

Now, new apps that help people register and find bikes are being used more and more across cities like Beijing. The new apps that let people share bicycles are easing, traffic, and reducing pollution. Cheng Li started using bike share services about six months ago. He said now he is using the car less and the bike more. For Zhang Jian, the bike share revolution makes him recollect the old days. “Now, when we’re riding home from work, especially in the evening, when it’s not rushed, it feels like we’re reliving the past,” Zhang said.
However, there is now a lot of competition among bike share providers because of their popularity. Some providers are trying to flood the streets with bikes to be more visible. Sometimes there are so many bikes that they completely block the sidewalks. This has become a problem for city governments. It is not uncommon for bike users to leave bikes in the middle of the street or on the sidewalk. This blocks cars and people in already crowded cities.
In Beijing’s southern district of Daxing, officials have been trying to fix the problem by seizing illegally parked bikes. VOA spoke to a woman who said, “Bike sharing is really convenient, but no one is taking care of the problem of illegally parked bikes.” Behind her were several thousand seized bikes.
Many people in China feel that bike shares are helping reduce the country’s transportation problems and polluted air. However, they also hope companies will do more to improve their service and avoid flooding the streets with bikes. 8. Which is the cause of traffic jams in major Chinese cities

A. The booming of cars. C. Poor road conditions.

B. Lack of bike share services. D. Lack of parking lots.
9. What does the underlined word “recollect” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Step forward.

B. Back off.

C. Look back. D. Slide away.
10. What does paragraph 3 mainly want to tell us about the bike shares
A. Their popularity. B. Their problems. C. Their competition. D. Their advantages.
11.What do you think will be discussed about the bike shares in the following paragraph
A. They create bike revolution. C. They bring about polluted air.
B. They solve the traffic problems. D. They need further improving.
D
Food production does great harm to our environment. There are many procedures involved in the manufacture of food that result in greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Some procedures require the consumption of large amounts of fossil fuels, such as the transportation and storage of food products. Other factors that cause great damage to our environment include the overuse of fresh water.

The production of beef is more damaging to the environment than that of any other food we consume, Raising large numbers of cattle requires the production of large amounts of food for the animals. It’s estimated that producing one pound of beef requires seven pounds of feed.

Land use is also a problem. If the cattle are free-range cattle, large areas of land are required for them to live on. This has led to disastrous forest cutting and the loss of rare plants and animal species, particularly in tropical rain forests in Central and South America.

Another problem specific to beef production is methane emissions 放).Although many people are aware of the damaging effects of carbon dioxide, they don’t realize methane’s global warming potential is 25 times worse, making it a more dire problem.

Unfortunately, beef consumption is growing rapidly. This is the result of simple supply and demand factors. Specifically, there are two main causes of demand that are encouraging the production of more supply. First, the increase in the world population means there are more people to consume meat. The second factor is socioeconomic advancement. As citizens in developing nations become financially stable, they can afford to buy more meat.

Therefore, one way to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions is for people around the world to significantly cut down on the amount of beef they eat. 12.Which of the following is TRUE
A. Raising free-range cattle is eco-friendly. B. People cut down trees for animal habitats.
C .Producing beef can damage the environment.

D. Carbon dioxide causes far more harm than methane. 13.The underlined word “dire” in Para.4 means .
A. urgent

B. common C. typical

D. avoidable
14.Beef production is growing rapidly because .
A. more people are in demand of beef B. developing countries raise more cattle C. more land is available to raise cattle D. the cost of raising cattle is relatively low 15.The author writes this article to .

A. describe the booming of the beef production B. emphasize the advantages of beef production C. condemn the deforestation of the rain forest D. argue for a decrease in beef consumption
